Henry Blumberg, winner of the Humanitarian Award

Henry Blumberg has practiced as a Barrister in Toronto since 1984 ans is the Managing Partner of Blumberg Segal LLP.

He attended University of Cape Town (UCT), and obtained a B.A. LL.B degree in 1966. He was admitted as a solicitor to the Supreme Court of South Africa and practised law in Port Elizabeth from 1967 to 1980.

As a student he was awarded the Queen Scout Certificate and from his student days to the present he has been involved in volunteer work. At UCT he served for two terms each on the executive of the Student Representative Council and as President of the South African Union of Jewish Students. He was Vice President of the Student Visiting Lecturers Fund and was also active in SHAWCO and NUSAS.

After Graduating at UCT he was involved in Rotary International in South Africa and served on Board of a Rotary Club and the District Board and represented Rotary in an exchange to California.

In addition to practicing law in Port Elizabeth he also developed real estate there: Lovemore Heights, Providentia, Kamma Ridge and Vikingvale and was an initiator of the Greenacres Development on Cape Road. He was Regional Chairman and a board member of the National Council of South African Property Owners Association (SAPOA), and a Foundation Member of the South African Institute of Property Practitoners (IPPSA).

After immigrating to Canada with his family in 1980 he also served on many volunteer boards and assisted in the formation of a number of non-profit organizations. He founded and is Chairman of the University of Cape Town Foundation which has raised funds for post graduate scholarships in many disciplines.

He is also a founding member and present Chairman of the Canadian Council of South Africans (CANSOSA), an umbrella organization in Toronto representing 25 committees of South African-born Canadians.

He served as a Director and executive member of the Clarke Institute of Psychiatry Foundation, and its Honorary legal counsel. Together with his spouse Dr. Marcia Blumberg he supported and facilitated in brining many South African theatre events to Toronto. He was a founding director of the Canadian Institute of Mortgage Brokers and Lenders Foundation, 1999-2003. He has been a member of the Real Estate Issues Committee as well as the TItle Insurance Committee of the Law Society of Upper Canada. In addition he was a member of the Government Legislation Committee of the Ontario Brokers Association. He contributed law related articles to periodicals and the author of the column "Taking Counil". He also lectured extensively on Interest Group and is a Board Member of the Liepaja Memorial Wall in Latvia. He has given presentations on genealogy related matters at many conferences. He is a member of the Law Society of Upper Canada, the Canadian Bar Association, Association of Trial Lawyers of America, The International Bar Association and the Canadian Institute of Mortgage Brokers and Lenders.
