Glory Khumalo, winner of the Arts and Culture Award FREEDOM DAY GALA 2008 Glroy has been in much demand in choreographing events showcasing the cultural dress and attires of the various ethnic subgroups, not only of South Africa, but also of neighbouring African states. The South African independence celebrations are just one of the occasions Glory has participated in which have led to invitations from churches, the University of Macmaster, International School of Design and Technology, the annual Toronto Afro-Fest, and special events sponsored by the Counsul General"s office in Toronto. Glory was recently "embedded" for an extended period with the cast of the highly successful UMOJA, - the South African show that has had extended and repeat visits to Toronto - as part of their North American tour. Having formed close friendships with Glory through their musical performances at Afro-Fest events, cast members of South African group AMAMPONDO have continued their close communication with Glory over the years. Her "big heart" and great hospitality as well as her proficiency in several Southern African languages(Sotho, Tshwana, Zulu, Xhosa, Swazi, Afrikaans, English, Pedi, Shangaan, "FANA-KA-LO". etc) make her a social magnet, and these attributes are greatly valued and appreciated by the itenerant artists passing through Toronto. She has become a "big sister" away from home to some of the younger members of the group. Glory"s skills extend into the mastery of the creation of various ethnic dishes of the subcontinent, in ways that make visitors to her welcoming home nostalgic, as they savour the tastes of home and enjoy some of the best Southern Afican music. Glory has participated in Heritage Classes, and dance and dress lessons for children of the South African community in the Toronto and Hamilton areas. Her impact and influence has inspired many - children and adults alike. |
